Lydia recalls the first time she met Javier. At this point in her life, she’s working full time at her bookshop. She’s owned the business for nearly a decade and makes money selling stationary merchandise and best sellers. Nevertheless, she always stocks copies of her favorite books—the ones that have changed her life. Until today, only two people have ever approached the register with one of these titles. Javier stands out because he decides to buy two of them. Lydia invites him to return later to discuss the books. He returns the following Monday, and they chat for so long that she offers him a cup of coffee. He leaves with seven more books that day.
In this flashback, the reader meets Javier and gets to know him from Lydia’s perspective before she knew who Javier really was. The reader also gains insight into Lydia’s profession and personality, notably her love of literature. The fact that Javier and Lydia at one point shared such a close bond sharpens the pain of Lydia’s grief in the present: in addition to the loss of her family, she must also reckon with the fact of Javier’s betrayal.

The following Friday, it is raining. Two ominous-looking men are huddled under the shop’s awning, and they make Lydia feel uncomfortable. She has already paid the cartel and doesn’t what they want. Nevertheless, Javier succeeds in shooing them off. Lydia hesitates to understand, and she eventually “willfully forg[e]t[s],” the power he yields at that moment.
Lydia’s grief is intertwined with a feeling of regret for not having seen who Javier really was. In this passage, Lydia reflects on what she believes is the moment she should have known the truth about Javier. In hindsight, she is angry at herself for her ignorance and perhaps even selfishness. Here, Lydia indirectly blames herself for her family’s massacre—because of her attachment to Javier, she “willfully” ignored signs that should have alerted her to his danger.

As time goes on, Javier shares many details about his life with Lydia, including that he has a daughter (who is the love of his life) and that he dabbles in poetry. He also confesses that his life hasn’t turned out the way he planned. Lydia tries to encourage him to change course, but the truth is that she doesn’t understand the depth of his dilemma. Later, for her birthday, he gifts her a beautifully wrapped box of chocolates from a master Parisian chocolatier. Lydia eats every last one.

Feeling emboldened by a four-month period of calm, Lydia and her family decide to go to a restaurant in the safest district of the city to celebrate her birthday. Acapulco had previously experienced an explosion of violence between rival cartels, and now a new group is in charge: Los Jardineros (“The Gardeners”), named for their preference in weaponry. That night, after her birthday dinner, Los Jardineros are the subject of Lydia and Sebastián’s conversation. So far, the violence has been contained, with fewer “innocents” getting killed. This makes Lydia and Sebastián wonder if things might be getting better for the residents of Acapulco under the new regime.

Because of his job as a journalist, Sebastián has comprehensive knowledge of the cartels. He tells Lydia that the new jefe (“boss”), nicknamed La Lechuza (“The Owl”) is intelligent, different from the other jefes who came before him. He said that “in a different life,” La Lechuza “could’ve been Bill Gates or something.” Later that night, after Sebastián falls asleep, the memory of that phrase ignites a pang of worry in Lydia. She gets out of bed and rummages through Sebastian’s notes. In them, she finds a photo that confirms her fear: La Lechuza is her friend, Javier.
