Sadhu becomes Dell’s roommate after Dell has to move out of his old apartment to make space for Willow, Pattie, Quang-ha, and Mai. He differs from Dell in many ways, being a vegetarian who likes spicy food and has no television, and this forces Dell out of his comfort zone.

Explanation and Analysis:
In this quote, Dell reacts to learning that his new roommate, Sadhu, is a vegetarian who likes spicy food. Dell is himself a big meat eater who gets “indigestion” from spicy food, so living with Sadhu will be well outside Dell’s comfort zone. Although Dell seems reluctant about going to live with Sadhu, at the same time he demonstrates a certain amount of bravery and selflessness (qualities he didn’t show before) simply by leaving his home to Pattie and her family so that they can convince Social Services that they live in a place suitable for Willow. Explanation and Analysis:
In this quote, Dell enthusiastically answers Willow’s request for sunflower seeds by buying her an extravagant number of seeds. Although Dell has at times been reluctant to do what he needs to do to help Willow (such as in the earlier quote where he complained about Sadhu’s spicy food), this quote now shows his enthusiastic determination to help Willow. And so, just as Dell took selfishness and his lack of concern for others to an extreme in his old, possession-stuffed apartment, he now arguably goes overboard in the opposite direction by helping Willow with too many seeds for her to Dolorem et quae.
