Professor Hammer’s boyfriend. He is a doctoral student at UCLA and the same age as the narrator. He’s writing his dissertation on the American literary expatriates of Paris. He has white teeth and blonde hair, giving him the appearance of a model in a toothpaste ad, “where his role would be the young father of toothsome cherubs.” The narrator meets him when he’s invited to dinner at the professor’s home.
