It is not until the end of Reckoning that Magda Szubanski fully embraces her sexuality. At a young age, Magda knew she was different: she was attracted to girls more than she was attracted to boys. But when Magda was growing up, there was still much social stigma around homosexuality. For many years, Magda exists in a state of self-division. She hides the truth about her sexuality from others, creating a public persona so that others will accept her and hiding her true self from the world—and even from herself.

This state of self-division persists well into Magda’s adulthood. Although Magda has relationships with women as she grows older, she persists in hiding her sexuality from her parents, sure that they will shun her. When Magda finally comes out to her parents, their acceptance shocks her and causes her to feel ashamed all over again for having underestimated their unconditional love for her and driving an unnecessary wedge between herself and her family. What is more, her personal shame about her sexuality doesn’t disappear—even after she comes out publicly, she still feels exposed and disgusted with herself. Her habit of dividing and burying her real self has become so ingrained that it is not until years later that she proudly calls herself a lesbian. Magda’s long and arduous journey to self-acceptance sheds light on the destructive, long-lasting effects of shame.

Chapter 8: Feeling Different Quotes

There was a dark side to my Marcia Brady madness. I knew that I liked her in a way that was different from the other kids. I didn’t just want to be her friend. I wanted to kiss her. […] And, without being told, I knew this was not ‘normal.’ Somehow I knew that I posed what researchers call a ‘social identity threat’ to myself.

Explanation and Analysis:
This passage occurs when Magda starts watching TV to handle her social loneliness. Right away, Magda frames her obsession with Marcia Brady (of The Brady Bunch) negatively—as having “a dark side.” Before Magda admits to herself that she is gay, she considers being gay a “dark” and “different” way to be. This feeling perhaps stems from Marcia Brady and The Brady Bunch itself. The Brady Bunch depicts the perfect children and the perfect family; the titular family sets an example of what is “normal.” Therefore, Magda is drawn to The Brady Bunch for two opposing reasons. Chapter 13: Sharpies Quotes

I both wanted and didn’t want Kerry to know how I felt about her. I wanted to kiss her […] but I was afraid she would think I was the most reviled and despised thing: a lezzo. My tender feelings were like a jammed signal, unable to escape my furiously beating heart. I was paralyzed, like a hysterical mute, wanting to tell her but desperate to hide my true nature. So it was that the moment of my gay adolescence was delayed at take-off and has, I fear, been stuck on the runway ever since.

Explanation and Analysis:
This quote occurs when Magda develops a crush on her best friend Kerry. In this quote, Magda explains how she has two opposite desires at the same time.  One desire is simple and straightforward: she “wanted to kiss [Kerry].” The other desire clearly comes from the general attitude toward homosexuality: she is afraid of being “reviled,” “despised,” and thought of as a “lezzo.” That Magda fears being called “lezzo,” particularly reveals society’s mainstream condemnation of homosexuality. Significantly, Magda herself feels that being a “lezzo” is the “most reviled and despised thing.” In this way, society’s perception of homosexuality causes her Dolorem et quae. Chapter 18: The Cherry on the Christmas Pudding Quotes

How could I explain what I hadn’t even begun to understand myself? That I was locked in the Jedi mind trick of my father’s denial? That I was the victim of a victim. All I knew was what I feared—that I was not like other human beings and I was devoid of normal emotion. And there was no way I was going to let these [friends], kind and patient as they were, see that.

Explanation and Analysis:
This quote occurs when Magda arrives at college and still feels the need to hide her true self from her friends. Magda’s formulation of the first two sentences as questions reveals the desperation that she feels surrounding her identity and her self-expression. She wonders, without knowing the answer or the solution, how she can be expected to present herself honestly to the world when she herself does not know who she is. In this way, Magda’s problem is two layers deep: not only is she afraid of being open, but she is not open even to herself. Magda goes on Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non. Chapter 23: D-Generation and De Profundis Quotes

I decided I must be some kind of sexual traitor, who had colluded in order to enjoy the benefits of a straight life. […] I didn’t understand that I was acting out a psychodrama. My role was written. I was predetermined and I didn’t even know it.

The pasteurization of my personality did not help with my comedy writing. Comedy is all about finding your voice. […] Your voice is best when it is formed where it is found. But what if you are trying to be what you are not? What if you don’t know who you are?

Explanation and Analysis:
This quote appears when Magda first starts working on D-Generation and feels compelled to conceal her sexuality from the cast. In the first part of this quote, Magda uses the language of betrayal to illustrate how hard she was on herself during this time. In calling herself a “sexual traitor,” Magda attributes her confusion around her sexuality to moral inconsistency, as though one’s commitment to a certain expression of their sexuality is the same as one’s commitment to moral behavior. In retrospect, however, Magda says that she was acting out a “psychodrama.” She sees the way she behaved during this Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non. Incidunt dolores sunt. Chapter 24: Fast Forward Quotes

In the following months, as it gathered pace, I started to feel like I was strapped to a rocket. Magazine covers, interviews, endorsements. Suddenly I really was a household name, dogged by the horrible hollow feeling that the wrong ‘me’ had shot to fame. At night I dreamed that I was hanging on to the outside rail of a runaway train.

Related Characters: Magda Szubanski (speaker)
Page Number and Citation: 249
Explanation and Analysis:
This quote appears when Magda has gained fame as a television comedy actor. Magda’s initial reaction to fame is the sensation that she did not achieve it of her own free will. She uses the image of the rocket to illustrate how fame is like an object hurtling into space and how she is an unwilling passenger “strapped”—as by a kidnapper—to the rocket. Following the image of the rocket, Magda lists what fame entails: “magazine covers, interviews, endorsements.” The incomplete format of this sentence creates a sense of fame’s meaningless chaos and expresses Magda’s overwhelmed state: Magda is suddenly existing Dolorem et quae. Chapter 26: Hollywood Quotes

Fame never saved anyone. More than anything Hollywood sat directly on the fault line of all my insecurities. I suspect it would not have been a good idea for someone like me, with so many cracks and fissures, to live in an earthquake zone. […] Some small, quiet, healthy part of me knew that if I stayed in Hollywood things would not go well for me. The gulf between my real self and my false self would grow ever wider.

Explanation and Analysis:
This passage occurs when Magda returns from Hollywood having given up an opportunity to become a Hollywood TV star. Throughout this quote, Magda uses the phenomenon of an earthquake to describe her feelings about Hollywood. Magda imagines that her insecurities, like the Earth’s tectonic plates, meet at a “fault line” where, like with the Earth’s crust, there is constant friction and instability. Hollywood “[sits] directly” on this fault line of Magda’s insecurities, an image which states that living in Hollywood, for Magda, would mean living in the midst of her insecurities. Chapter 27: An Outing Quotes

The crucial difference between Lesbian Gay Transgender Bi-Sexual Intersex and Questioning people and other minorities is this: in every other minority group the family shares the minority status. In fact it is often something that unites them. But gay people are a minority within the family. A minority of one. […] All through our growing up, from the instant we realize we are gay, we live with the gnawing fear that our parents’ love could turn to hatred in an instant.

Explanation and Analysis:
This passage occurs just before Magda comes out about her sexuality to her parents. In the first part of this quote, Magda uses official terms and a formal style of address that promotes seriousness. Instead of using unofficial or informal terms to refer to the community, she spells out the components of the LGBTQ community. Furthermore, she draws a clear comparison and makes use of statement-making punctuation (such as the colon and the italics) to emphasize her point. Through these techniques, Magda presents herself not simply as a subjective vessel of LGBTQ experience, but also as a spokesperson for and Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non. Chapter 41: Trepanning Quotes

‘That’s what I believe is real heroism. People who are afraid, have their pants full, and yet—they go and do something. Then you say, By God! It took courage to do that! But if you’re not afraid, it’s easy.’

And it dawns on me: that’s me. [Peter] is describing me. That is what I have just done.

Explanation and Analysis:
This passage occurs near the end of the memoir when Magda is recalling Peter’s description of heroism. Peter’s definition of heroism clarifies that bravery is not an absence of fear; instead, bravery is action in spite of fear. To illustrate this point, Peter claims that people who act even if they “have their pants full”—even if they are burdened or threatened or afraid—are impressive. Such people draw from Peter the exclamations, “By God! It took courage to do that!” By contrast, there is nothing impressive about the actions people do when fear is not an obstacle: the action is “easy” Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut.
