Tyrone watches Diondra read her poem and sees that she is nervous. He encourages her to slow down and promises her that she is among friends. She is one of several students reading a poem that day. All of the other students are nervous as well.
Here, Tyrone tries to show Diondra that she is in a supportive environment. The nervousness that Diondra and the other students feel suggests that they are doing something difficult, frightening, and deeply personal by reading in front of the class.
