Analysis
Gloria, who is friends with Lupe, makes a shopping list while attending Mr. Ward’s class. Gloria is a single mother and still has two years left of high school. Gloria’s life is a lot more difficult since becoming a mother. Although her family and teachers are understanding, she still barely sleeps and does not have enough time to study. She wishes she could convince Lupe not to try and rush motherhood.
Gloria is the opposite of Lupe. She is someone who has had to grow up much too fast and is now experiencing the consequences. Even in the most supportive setting, Gloria is in a difficult position, which is why is bothers her that Lupe is envious of what she has. It is often the case that students in Mr. Ward’s class are envious of one another, in part, because they don’t fully understand what their classmates are going through.
