Summary
Analysis
On the final Open Mike Friday of the year, Mr. Ward presents everyone with their own copy of the class poetry anthology, which contains all of the poems written throughout the semester. Then, everyone in the school attends an assembly put together by Mr. Ward where Tyrone and his classmates read their poems aloud.
The class poetry anthology combines everyone’s work together, representing their work as individuals and as a collective. The binding on the book is akin to the bond that Mr. Ward’s class has formed throughout the semester. Meanwhile, the assembly is the culmination of all the hard work the students have put in throughout the semester.

Before the poetry readings, Mr. Ward asks his students if they would like to say anything about what writing poetry has meant to them. Tyrone stands up and delivers a brief speech about how poetry has helped him see that he is not as different from his classmates as he initially thought. After the assembly, Mr. Ward thanks Tyrone for speaking. He also informs Tyrone that the school will be holding a slam poetry assembly the following year, which gets Tyrone excited.
