Summary
Analysis
Leslie delivers an existential poem about how all people share certain aspects of the human experience, particularly those relating to life and death. For her, friendship and finding common ground is an important part of experiencing life to the fullest.
The value of community is an important theme that runs throughout the book. For some time, Leslie lacked any sense of community at her new school, but, after meeting Porscha, she realizes the importance of finding community in unlikely places. After all, even if people have different cultural backgrounds, they are all united by certain universal qualities of the human experience—in this case, death and grief.
