Claude Character Analysis

Claude is both the narrator and protagonist of “Vengeance is Mine Inc.” Opportunistic and desperate for money, he concocts the idea to profit off the grievances of the wealthy by turning revenge into a real business after reading Lionel Pantaloon’s gossip column in the newspaper. Though his scheme is undeniably underhanded—he and his partner, George, are paid handsomely to physically harm gossip columnists—Claude is less concerned with ethics than with financial survival. He operates with a gambler’s instinct, as he dreams of turning a few thousand dollars into a fortune. His partnership with George is one of mutual enablement, each feeding off the other’s enthusiasm for the thrill of the con. But unlike George, who relishes the theatrics of their work, Claude remains grounded, making sure they get paid and stay ahead of the trouble that is bound to follow.

Explanation and Analysis:
As Claude and George brainstorm ideas for their new business venture in “Vengeance is Mine Inc.,” George suggests a particularly extreme service: kidnapping the targeted gossip columnist, stripping them of their clothes, and abandoning them in rush hour traffic—for a steep price of $2,500. Claude initially shoots the idea down as too extreme, but George points out that their business is built on catering to the egos and grudges of the wealthy. If a client like Mr. Womberg is willing to pay, why set limits? With this satisfactory justification, Claude adds the service to their offerings. Claude and George have Dolorem et quae.
