Mike Schofield Character Analysis

In “Taste,” Mike Schofield is a wealthy, status-conscious stockbroker who enjoys hosting dinner parties to showcase his fine wine collection. He takes particular pride in impressing Richard Pratt, a renowned gourmet, and engages in a recurring bet with him to validate his own refined taste. Though Mike is typically self-assured, his enthusiasm often blinds him to the risks of his wagers. For instance, he eventually agrees to bet his daughter Louise’s hand in marriage, convinced there is no way he can lose. His desperation to win overrides his better judgment, and he pressures Louise into going along with the bet despite her objections. In the end, when the maid reveals that Pratt has cheated, Mike’s wife must intervene to prevent an outburst.
